Patriotic Christmas- John Jay's Dec. 23, 1776 Christmas Address to Demoralized New Yorkers and Americans

Thomas Paine's words came out the same day as John Jay's Address, on December 23, 1776. Thomas Paine's American Crisis made it to the Maryland Gazette on February 6, 1777 and John Jay's Address was printed in the February 20 and 27 editions of the Maryland Gazette. The March 6, 1777 edition apparently is missing but it contained the third part of the address.

Think of the setting around Fishkill, New York as John Jay has to travel dangerously in New York. He has to keep the activities of the Continental Army and New York Militia (he was a Colonel) as well as keep his family safe. In the back of the picture you will note a crib. John and Sally Jay had two sons: Peter (born in 1776- January) and William (born in 1789- June). One son was born with the Declaration of Independence and the second with the Constitution.

Feel free to pass this message to your friends as a Christmas card reminder of a Patriotic Christmas and remember the sacrifice of our Founding Fathers as well as the Christian heritage of our Founders. Jay mentioned God and having faith in God 33 times in this address. This message was paid for by Continental Congress to be disseminated throughout the country. It made it to the Maryland Gazette. People knew that John Jay was a sincere Christian. This message did not keep him from serving as a Chief Justice- as a matter of fact he was chosen as the first Chief Justice.

This message is for all Americans. Jay outlawed slavery in the state of New York and started a Free African School in New York City. He was a good friend of William Wilberforce. Frederick Douglass gave a high compliment to John Jay as he gave the eulogy for his abolitionist son William Jay (the one born in 1789- when the new government started under the New Constitution.

Phil Webster with 1787 FAITH booksigning at William and Mary bookstore Saturday December 17th from 1 to 4 PM

Phil Webster will have a booksigning of "1787 FAITH: The Christian Worldview of the Signers of the Constitution" on Saturday December 17th at William and Mary University from 1 to 4 PM.

1787 FAITH comes from researching the 25 volumes of Letters of the Delegates of Congress 1774-1789 and 34 volumes of Journals of Continental Congress along with other sources.

Were you ever taught in your high school about the two hour worship service on April 30, 1789 at St. Paul’s Chapel in New York City where our leaders dedicated the new government under the Constitution to God.? Washington, Adams, the Cabinet (Jay, Knox Hamilton, and Randolph), the Senate and the House of Representatives (which included James Madison) walked from Federal Hall to St. Paul’s Chapel on Broadway.

Each signer of the Constitution has a brief biography and concise, pithy quotations demonstrating their Christian worldview (at least 36 of the 39 signers had a Christian worldview).

Honor God at Carpenters Hall in Philadelphia, Bruton Parish, Appeal to Heaven flag

When I entered Carpenters Hall the floor caught my attention: Honor God. From what I understand, the mosaic at Carpenters Hall was placed there around the time of the Civil War. However, it made me pause and think. The First Continental Congress which included John Jay and his father-in-law William Livingston had a day of prayer on October 5, 1774. They honored God.

Losing Focus in the United States

If you have ever looked at the cover of the book 1776 FAITH, you will notice that the two main characters in the drawing are very well done by Frank B Mayer. The picture is the artist's copy of "The Continentals." Take special note of the other soldiers. This painting was chosen for the book because it depicts how we in the United States are losing focus.

Welcome to 1776 Faith/1787 Faith

Welcome to 1776 Faith April 2016

Welcome to www.1776faith.blogspot.com. This blog attempts to document the Christian worldview of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. My humble research shows that 54 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence had a Christian worldview. Of the signers of the Constitution 36 out of 39 had a Christian worldview (totals: 90 of 95). The sister blog entitled www.1787constitutionfaith.blogspot.com attempts to document the Christian worldview of the signers of the Constitution. The Founding Fathers were not perfect but they passed on to us the best of the imperfect governments. Be on the lookout for the new book 1787 Faith: The Christian Worldview of the Signers of the Constitution. This is the follow up for 1776 Faith: The Christian Worldview of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence

If this is your first time to check out 1776 Faith, please take a look at the signers of the Declaration of Independence by states and their Christian worldview in the 2009 entries; take note of the strength of the New England signers.

Portray John Jay

PORTRAY JOHN JAY

Have you ever given serious consideration to the Christian worldview of the Founding Fathers? How about hearing it from the nation's first Chief Justice John Jay? Did they teach you in high school that he was asked by the New York Convention to address the state of New York during the trying times of December 1776 and in that address mentioned God and having faith in God 33 times? Did they teach you in college about Mr. Jay being President of the American Bible Society? Did you learn in graduate school that there was a four hour communion service to start the Supreme Court in New York City? Have you ever heard in your church that Jay, Washington, Adams, the Senate and the House of Representatives under the Constitution met at St. Paul's Chapel on April 30, 1789 to dedicate the country's new government to God?

Phil Webster has dug deeply into the primary sources of the Founding Fathers to find out where they stood. He has heard what many have heard in classrooms, books, magazines, church sermons, news stories, etc. that all the Founders were Deists and that there was no place for God in the public square. Phil Webster has taken the time to read 25 volumes of Letters of the Delegates of Congress 1774-1789 and 34 volumes of Journals of Continental Congress. Phil's research does not come from just shooting off the hip. John Jay is just the man to present the Christian worldview of the Founders. Phil graduated from Asbury College where there were chapel services three times a week. Most students in our current society have not had that opportunity. That background helps Phil relate to the Founders attending morning and evening prayers while attending college. That background helped the Founders stay married (in the huge majority of cases). Those chapel services helped the Founding Fathers and Phil be a better husband and father. Phil also attended a believing seminary (Trinity Evangelical Divinity School). It is hard to fathom that people can attend and graduate from seminary but not believe in the Bible nor be a follower of Jesus Christ. Phil, like John Jay, believes in God's Word to be true and follows Jesus Christ.
